#4 Connect To Character Attributes

Laurie Halse Anderson, "Speak" Farrar Straus Giroux, New York, 1999.

Courage
In my novel "Speak" courage is something that is needed for the main character Melinda. If she had the courage she could ignore all the annoyance and frustration brought opon her from her ex friends, teachers, and her parents. Melinda thinks she's weak and has no chance at surviving at anything in high school. She thinks her teachers hate her. All of her used to be friends ignore her. A lot of the people she knew a while ago changed and started hanging out with different clubs and groups. Her parents always fight with her about how she never tells them about any important school work and tests. Melinda has one good friend she met, but her friend always wants to be apart of the school spirit so her friend is rarely around to hangout or talk. Melinda needs the courage to go and make new friends and instead of crying in an abandoned janitors closet waiting for things to get better, she needs the courage to stand up for herself and cheer up.
